Are you feeling shaky or frazzled?
This morning I was feeling anxious about a few things. You know that feeling you get when you feel off-kilter and you are not sure you can get yourself back to center?
Yeah. It was like that.
And I knew that working at a fast pace to get everything done would only make it worse. So what did I do instead?
I slowed down.
It’s the exact opposite of what you would expect. But I have discovered that when feeling frazzled, slowing down can make a huge difference.
The other thing I realized was that I wasn’t feeling grounded.
When I feel grounded I don’t stress out as much and I am able to handle whatever is happening around me better. It’s like someone threw the light switch on after I’ve been operating in a dim room.
So how do you get grounded?
First off, notice how your body feels, then pick one of these grounding techniques:
1. Sit underneath a tree
Find a tree that has a good size tree trunk and sit with your back against the tree for at least 10 minutes. (Your bottom should be on the ground, although you might put a coat or blanket underneath you.) If you want to add an extra part, imagine whatever energy you don’t want goes down the tree’s roots into the earth. But if all you do is lean against the tree, you will notice a subtle shift over time, feeling calmer.
2. Walk barefoot on the ground
If the weather is warm enough, walking barefoot on the earth can help you ground. Some people love walking on the grass, while others prefer to squish their toes in the sand. (Personally I am a beach girl.)
3. Hang out in nature
Nature has a way of soothing the soul, whether you take a walk, sit underneath the trees, or stare up at the sky. It grounds you in ways that being indoors never will. When was the last time you hung out in nature? Even if you don’t walk barefoot or sit under a tree, go play with nature and see what happens.
Once you have completed one of the grounding techniques, notice how your body feels. Listen to it. What does it need?

I am very connected to trees. I never noticed their impact on me until about two years ago. I love being surrounded by trees.
