A few weeks back I was driving in Vermont on vacation and the GPS system in my blue hatchback brought me to a metal gate that stopped me on the road. It felt like an annoying obstacle. How do I find my way out of the maze of Bennington College (where I have never been before) and get to the other side of the gate when my GPS wasn’t giving the right info? That’s when I decided to use the art of appreciation. So I swung the car door open and … [Read more...]
What Are Secrets To Healing Yourself?
How do you heal yourself? Right now I am studying with 3 healers. They have different ways of looking at the healing process. Each with an incredible gift and a passion for sharing what feels right to her. If you had told me as a kid that I would learn various healing modalities, such as Reiki, I would have laughed and wondered what you were talking about. Dramatically I was pushed onto this path from multiple injuries. Being rear-ended like a … [Read more...]
How to Perform a Simple House Healing
Is your home feeling a little off? Have you ever tried a house healing to see if that will help the situation? Let's talk about a simple way to energetically clear your space. It's called smudging. And it's a tradition that some Native American tribes practice. Here are the smudging steps that were taught to me. Purchase a small bundle of sage. These are usually at health food stores, although I am sure that you can … [Read more...]
Follow Your Bliss Challenge
Sometimes there has to be a big, emotional upheaval to kick you into the life that you desire. Let’s just say I have had some major kick sessions earlier this year. And I am ready to let loose and enjoy my summer. What about you? Change is not always comfortable. That’s fine because otherwise you settle. You settle into a sense of complacency. Thinking this is good enough. This summer I have the wonderful opportunity to … [Read more...]
How to Heal Despair
On Friday, I showed my students a documentary about a Holocaust survivor. Listening to Gerda's story is at times overpowering, especially since I am an empath. The devastation feels so unbearable and I haven't even lived her journey. So many scenes stand out in my mind, but the one that totally gets me is when she talks about how her father made her wear boots in June on the day that the Nazis took her away. Those ski boots helped her survive a 500 mile death … [Read more...]
Ask For What You Want
A few weeks back I was watching the Eyes on the Prize documentary (excellent series) and heard Coretta Scott King talk about the fateful Montgomery Bus Boycott. At first the Montgomery Improvement Association did not ask for integration on the buses, but just asked to be treated better. But when this common courtesy was refused, then the association decided to ask for what they really wanted...integration. And it struck me, how many times … [Read more...]
Got Faith?
I saw Faith today. She was weaving a web Amidst the dancers of life Wearing a golden gossamer dress And dancing to a sweet tune that Only she sensed. I saw Faith today. She was leaping across the stage As the audience Absorbed her every move. Her hips undulated like the waves of water that Caress you when you plunge into the ocean. I saw Faith. Back in 2008, I wrote this poem at a time when my faith had wavered … [Read more...]
#Martyr
I was trained to be a martyr. To ignore people’s comments as best I could. To put up with suffering. In the fifth grade David Shea picked on me for the entire year. I still remember his name, but have forgotten almost everyone else’s name since I was only in that school for a short while. And then I moved to Wisconsin. Inner city girl to small, small town. And once again in a very small school. I was the first new kid in … [Read more...]
Ever Talk Yourself Out Of What You Want?
Do you ever talk yourself out of something that you really want, especially if it's a chunk of change? Yeah. I excel at it. I find myself wanting something. A LOT. I look at whatever it is that I desire, in this case studying with a particular teacher. To the point that I kinda obsess about it. I read her course description several times and check out her website. I consider whether or not it is really a good … [Read more...]
How To Heal Yourself
Do you have somebody who irritates you? Do you feel like you're still holding onto past hurts? I know the feeling. I find that I have places in me that are fragmented, lost, and hurt. Life drives me a little crazy sometimes. So much going on. So many expectations. How does healing take place amidst all of this? Years ago, I read a book by Virginia Satir about family systems, being the psychology buff that I am. The big take away with this … [Read more...]
