Every time I buy a car, even if it is used, I always end up putting a scratch somewhere on the car. It is inevitable. Even if I want a perfect-looking car, it never happens.
Perfection. Somehow we want perfection in our lives and yet there is always imperfection.
We want the perfect mate. We want a job that fits us perfectly. Sometimes we want the best kids or the perfect friends. You get the idea.
So how did we get here?
I think it has to do with advertising telling us to have the perfect life or to purchase an incredible product. If you don’t have these things advertising wants you to believe that you have been short-changed or you are missing out. It fills you with doubt instead of looking at how beautiful your life is, imperfections and all.
As we were growing up, parents expected us to follow their rules. In school, we were told to strive for the A+. We were expected to behave well in different settings, to please different people or to show our best work.
We try to be perfect. And in the end fail beautifully.
Our lives are filled with imperfection. That is what makes the world more exciting. Characters on TV and in novels are fascinating because they are flawed and imperfect. Nature is filled with storms and decay. Politicians and other leaders make mistakes.
We screw up and beat ourselves up for being imperfect. It is a vicious cycle. Do you want to stay on that train? Or do you want to get off it?
One way to release ourselves from the bind of perfection is to take a deep breath, stand in the moment, and appreciate it for all it is worth. Look for the beauty in the situation. Another thing you can do is play around with an affirmation. Try saying one of the affirmations below:
- I release myself from perfection.
- I release the need to be perfect.
- This moment is perfect just the way it is.
Our lives are marked by moments of sadness, joy, anger, love, and so much more. We are a canvas of perfect imperfection. Go ahead. Play around with your imperfection. Revel in it.
Feel free to report here what you discover.
